Couples therapy
Because the strongest relationships aren’t the ones without struggles, they’re the ones that know how to work through them.
We start with a 50-minute initial intake session together as a couple, where we get to know each other and begin building a foundation for our work together. From there, I'll meet individually with each partner so I can get to know each of you on your own, including your history, your perspective, and what you're each hoping to get out of therapy. Once those individual sessions are complete, we resume working together as a couple. Intermittent individual sessions may be sprinkled in as needed throughout our work together, whenever it's useful to check in one-on-one. All sessions are 50 minutes in length unless otherwise discussed.
A note on confidentiality: there are no secrets in couples therapy. Anything shared in an individual session, with either partner, may be brought into our couples work together if it's relevant to our shared goals. It's about making sure our work as a couple is built on the same honest foundation, for both of you.
Couples therapy can support:
❁ Partners feeling more like roommates than romantic partners
❁ Couples stuck in the same argument on repeat
❁ Partners navigating a breach of trust or infidelity
❁ Couples with mismatched desire, communication styles, or expectations around sex and intimacy
❁ Partners preparing for a major life transition together (marriage, moving, having a child, retirement)
❁ Couples navigating infertility or loss together
❁ Partners who love each other but feel disconnected
❁ Couples wanting to build stronger communication and conflict-resolution skills before problems take root
❁ Any relationship structure, including non-monogamous and LGBTQ+ couples, looking for informed, affirming support
Treatment approaches
I draw from research-based, couples-specific modalities, including:
Gottman Method Couples Therapy: a research-based approach that gives you practical tools for communication, managing conflict, and building deeper connection, grounded in decades of relationship research.
Sex Therapy (informed by Sexual Health Alliance training): specialized support for concerns related to desire, intimacy, and sexual connection within your relationship, delivered in a sex-positive, affirming framework.
A few other things worth knowing:
❁ Safety comes first. In situations involving abuse, safety concerns, or risk of harm, standard confidentiality and mandatory reporting laws still apply, regardless of the no-secrets policy.
❁ I remain neutral. My role isn't to take sides or change your partner, it's to support the health of the relationship as a whole.
❁ The goal is transparency that builds trust, not a "gotcha". How and when something gets brought into joint sessions is handled thoughtfully, not as an ambush.
❁ Records are shared between partners. Because you're being treated as a couple, standard individual confidentiality protections (like those in individual therapy) don't apply the same way here. This extends to things like billing and scheduling as well as session content.
❁ Couples therapy is not often covered by insurance. Clients should be prepared to pay the full session fee. If you have questions about coverage, we recommend contacting your insurance provider directly.
